International Scale of River Difficulty

Rivers are rated on a "class" scale according to the size and technicality of the river, or a single whitewater rapid.

If you're new to the world of whitewater rafting, or other water sports such as canoeing or kayaking, it's recommended to read this standardized scale or river classification system.
The following it's known as the International Scale of River Difficulty, as defined by American Whitewater...

International Scale of River Difficulty:


There is a 2005 revised edition of the International Scale of River Difficulty (also by American Whitewater) that includes as well:

It's called Safety Code of American Whitwater.

Remember that to practice this and any other sports in South America, or the world for that matter, it's highly advisable to get the appropriate travelers insurance beforehand.
