How to Build a Successful Website Without Having a Clue
(and to place it in the Top 1%):

Daniel Moore

The story I'm about to share with you I know it only too well.
It's the story of my life.

How did I transition from having 0% knowledge in Internet matters (and a very troublesome relationship with computers), to manage a successful online business?..

Read on and make sure you read it through because it might change your life as it did with mine...

I was first introduced to a QWERTY keyboard back in my College days, in the late 60s.
Named Remington, it was a solid piece of metal that weighted about half a ton or so and required two full hands to move the carriage return.

No kidding, straight from Jurassic Park.

And noisy as hell.
Our tiny typing room sounded more like an Army shooting range than an educational institution.

That was the kind of technology I grew up with, when computers were completely out of the picture.
And they remained like an E.T. machine to me for quite a bit of time ahead.

"A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing".

Not long after, my studies shifted from Economic Sciences to Photography and Journalism and I was soon spending more time on the road than in my home town.

In the early 90s I was ready to decipher the computer mistery and enrolled in a DOS course.
Got more confused than ever before and decided to stick to my good old portable typewriter once again.

In the following years, as computers became widespread and the web transformed the world as we knew it, I understood that the faulty interface was between the chair and the keyboard and began exploring the cyberspace and email messaging armed with an old Mac.

By the way, if there is something I truly need to thank Steve Jobs for is for having created such a foolproof machine for some good old thick chaps out there, you know?..
They seem to be everywhere!

I was happy, content and almost understood the thing, however, it was nothing to write home about.

California Dreaming:

California blew my mind in more ways than one.

By year 2000 I was studying Digital Imaging as I needed to do the conversion from analog to digital photography and get my feet wet in Desktop Publishing.

It was there when the real discovery began..

First, it forced me to improve my relationship with computers, because taking classes with two monitors simultaneously was something of the outer space to me.
Whichever way I looked I could see younger students flying over their machines, while I still needed a Michelin map to navigate the bloody thing.

Eventually, I became kinda proficient and managed to complete my studies in one piece.

Second, and most importantly, introduced me to the concept of e-business.
A three-day seminar on e-commerce in Monterey got me shaken in the terrace.
It worked like a revelation kind of thing because I walked out of the place wanting to set up my own e-business straight away.

The concept fitted like a glove with my lifestyle and passion for travel.
Internet was giving me the chance to create a business based on what I loved and the ability to run it from any location in the world.

Would you call that work?..
I wouldn't in a thousand years.

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours...If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them."

Walden, Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

But having decided what I wanted to do for the rest of my life didn't answer the main question...

How do I do it?...

How do I set up a website without having a clue in HTML language, Javascript, CSS and God knows what else?..
Even the names were alien to me, just like basic Chinese characters.

More questions were cropping up but no answers whatsoever, and I just didn't feel like investing a couple of years learning the necessary skills either.

Left California for Rome in middle of July of 2002.

I was stuck and I knew it.

Paradoxically, after travelling on my own to some of the wildest and most desolated places on earth I still needed someone to walk me through if I was ever going to travel online.

All my searches probed fruitless and I wasn't able to find a suitable hosting company to cater to my needs.

Dublin Awakening:

And then I found it.

I knew I have found the ideal online partner for a very simple reason.
I was shopping for ways to build a website and I found a step-by-step guide to build a successful online business instead.

Like the one I have now.

In the early Spring of 2005 I landed in Dublin following the steps of my grandfather. He was born somewhere in County Armagh, in Northern Ireland.

Armed with an IBM machine, rented a small place next door to Saint James Gate, home to Guinness Brewery.
I couldn't be any closer to the heart of Ireland than that (with all due respect to Saint Patrick, of course).

Spent the first few month devouring all the e-books my newly found hosting company was feeding me with.
I had access to an astonishing amount of info and how-to guides, combined with a solid customer support and even a forum to place my questions every time I went blank.

But what really blew my mind was the ten day process (not calendar though) they have outlined to succed online.
From brainstorming to site profitability, no stone remained unturned, and I was able to have the whole picture in my head before uploading a single page.

And I succeeded.

Three years down the line I have a website in the Top 1%.
Have a very decent Alexa Ranking and Google PR and, most importantly, my traffic and business is flourishing more than ever before.

Now, I'm not telling you this to flag me as the smartest guy in the block because I'm certainly not. Besides, it wouldn't help you in the least.

I'm telling you this because one day you may want to be in control of your own destiny and earn a good living based on your passions, whichever they are.
And when you get there, you won't be working a single day in your life once again.

Like I do.
