Bolivia Photo Gallery is a visual introduction to South America's most elevated and isolated country, home to the largest proportion of indigenous people in Latin America - 62% of the total population.

Its strong indigenous culture is conformed by the Quechua (30%), the largest, Aymara (25%), Guarani (1.5%), Chiquitano (2.2%), Mojeno (0.85%) and other indigenous population totalizing 36 groups in all.

As a consequence, The Plurinational State of Bolivia has an overwhelming number of official languages spoken within its boundaries.

The name itself, "Bolivia", comes from Simón Bolívar, who led the independence war to break away from Spanish rule in 1825.

One of the two landlocked countries on the continent (the other being Paraguay), Bolivia's geography embraces an astonishing range of landscapes and climates. Dominated by the Andes, which march through the west in two parallel chains, between them runs the vast, windswept expanses of the Altiplano.

Two of the Altiplano's main features are Lake Titicaca - the highest navigable body of water in the world, shared with Peru, and Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni Salt Flats), the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 sq mi) located between Oruro and Potosi deparments.

Other geographic zones include the semi-tropical Yungas and temperate valleys descending the eastern slopes of the Andes; and the tropical lowlands which cover the entire eastern half of the country. If you are a nature lover, the sheer amount of geographic, topographic, climatic and biological diversity will astound you.

In terms of travel and tourism, Bolivia remains one of the continent’s safest countries for travelers, and one of the least expensives as well. Surely, political instability and drug traficking it's been flagged many times over in the last few years as a reason of concern, but any long-term traveler who is been around South America for a while knows it better.

In this regard, we'd like to share South America Travel Wise with you, where we try to provide you with a few pointers that come from our direct personal experience in the field rather than from government's official travel adice about "dos" and "don'ts".
